Beth Simkins-Smith, Director of Boarding, Leweston School, Dorset
Preparing a child for boarding school can be an emotional process for both parents and children. Start by having open conversations about the move, acknowledging that homesickness is normal and discussing how to manage it. This will ease your child’s worries and strengthen their confidence. Carefully check the school’s packing list – some items may be essential, while others, like certain electronics, may not be allowed. Trust the Housemaster or Housemistress; they have extensive experience helping new boarders settle in comfortably. Reach out to seasoned boarding parents for guidance – the school can connect you. While it’s natural to worry, remember that limited phone access is part of the routine. If your child isn’t calling often, it usually means they’re happily engaged. You can also stay updated by following Leweston’s Boarding’s X and Instagram accounts. Also, parents are welcome at most sports fixtures and other events in the school’s calendar, so feel free to attend and support. If you’re unsure about anything, just ask.
